We start in the riding hall, then ride out onto the comfortable bridle paths around Kálfholt. Parents are welcome to come along, either on foot or on horseback – after all, someone has to take the photos! Children who are used to riding or have been on a riding course can ride independently, while a lead rein is used for those with less experience. After their ride the children have the chance to groom their horses – and Hallgerður Loppa the cat and Embla the dog may be around as well!
Short Day Tours
An ideal ride for beginners, offering a unique opportunity to experience the remarkable character and qualities of the Icelandic horse. We ride at walking pace on comfortable bridle paths around the farm of Kálfholt. If all goes well and our riders are keen, we may try out the livelier tölt, a smooth running gait characteristic of the Icelandic horse.
A ride to suit both novices and more experienced riders. We ride at a leisurely tölt – the smooth running gait characteristic of the Iceland horse – from the farm of Kálfholt along the banks of the mighty Þjórsá river, surrounded by breathtaking mountain landscapes – with the accompaniment of the burbling of the river flowing by – while all around we see fields of graceful mares, powerful stallions and this year’s long-legged foals – all adding up to an unforgettable experience. The ride is followed by home-baked treats back at the farm.
This three-hour riding tour offers the opportunity to ride at different speeds in a variety of landscapes. In open country we will put on a burst of speed for an invigorating gallop! The ride is followed by home-baked treats back at the farm.
Five-hour riding tour, for experienced riders only. We ride about 20 kilometres in the lowlands, off-road on the banks of the Þjórsá river. We ride on good-quality unpaved bridle paths which are suitable for the tölt – the smooth run that is characteristic of the Icelandic horse – so both horses and riders enjoy the experience. At the halfway point, we stop for our packed lunch.
